I saw this pills called Collagen plus C and I was really interested until I learnt they come from cattle's skin.. I really want to take something to prevent or slow down skin's aging process but I have been a vegetarian since October 2007 and I'm not planning to change..What can be a collagen alternative for vegetarians?

I don't quite understand why you'd want to eat collagen - it's a complex protein that wouldn't be absorbed in any fashion at all, it'd just be degraded by your stomach acid and enzymes.

I believe in the principle of helping the body to sustain itself and heal itself from within, from its own innate mechanisms. I agree with Az R that it is pointless taking collagen as a supplement because it will be utilized as protein and digested as such. You could take enteric-coated hyaluronic acid as that should by-pass stomach digestion and get released in the intestines and absorbed form there but I still think it would be best to concentrate on boosting your own endogenous production of hyaluronic acid and collagen synthesis. There are certain supplements that are evidenced to do that...as shown by research studies. These include: vitamin C, glucosamine (you can get vegetarian glucosamine), the herbs ginkgo biloba and gotu kola.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest with you, if you are young and healthy you do not need to worry about expensive supplements. A healthy diet should suffice. Just make sure you eat lots of fruit and vegetables, as many as possible in the raw state, incorporate herbs in your diet as much as possible such as drinking herbal teas and drink enough filtered water and or herbal teas to keep your skin well hydrated and stay away from pollutants as much as possible...particularly the known aging tobacco smoke. A multi-vitamin/ multi-mineral supplement could be taken now and then as an added boost.
Best wishes.
