Lately, I've been waking up with puffy eyelids. Usually this only happens if I've overdosed on salty foods the night before. What other things can cause this?

ReplyDeleteallergies can sometimes do it, or if your room is overly stuffy and warm. if you sleep with a cooling gel eye pack it will also reduce the puffyness.

Answer
Mild puffiness of the skin under your eyes can result from a number of causes, including:
Heredity
Fluid retention such as due to changes in weather or hormone levels
Allergies or dermatitis, especially if puffiness is accompanied by redness and itching
Under-eye puffiness is usually only a temporary cosmetic concern and rarely a sign of a serious underlying medical condition. Some tips for reducing mild under-eye puffiness:
Raise the head of your bed at night. This helps prevent fluids from accumulating around your eyes as you sleep.
While sitting up, apply a cool tap water compress to the skin under your eyes for a few minutes. You can also use chilled cucumber slices, a refrigerated gel mask or chilled, damp tea bags.
There is some anecdotal evidence that hemorrhoid cream applied under the eyes can reduce puffiness. But no clinical trials have evaluated its effectiveness for this use. Also, ingredients in hemorrhoid cream may be irritating to the skin around your eyes, resulting in dryness and inflammation.
If puffiness is severe and persistent or you notice swelling (edema) in other parts of your body, see your doctor. He or she will want to rule out other possible causes of swelling, such as kidney or thyroid problems or a side effect of medications.

Thyroid problems
People suffering from a thyroid problem (also referred to as a goiter) normally have very protruding eyes - if you have any qualms about your thyroid not functioning effectively, or if you have any symptoms of an over - or under active thyroid please check the amount of iodine you consume, and consult your doctor immediately.
Aging and nutrition
As we age, the fragile skin around our eye start to lose its elasticity, and the lymphatic drainage system, which helps to keep the area voided of excess fluids, loses it proper functioning.
Nutrition can also play a part and although our product will assist in re-vitalizing the collagen and elastin in the skin around the eyes, you do need vitamin C in your body in order for collagen to be formed.
In the absence of vitamin C, the body cannot produce collagen. The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of 60 mg of vitamin C per day it will not achieve much, nor will it assist in enhancing and furthering the quality of your skin – this amount is only enough to prevent beriberi (scurvy).
To assist in collagen formation and re-vitalizing your fragile skin around the eyes - please consider taking an extra vitamin C (ascorbic acid) supplement, after checking with your medical practitioner.
When taking a vitamin C supplement, look at one that contains bioflavonoids (vitamin P) as well, as these bioflavonoids boosts the efficacy with which the vitamin will perform its work.
Tiredness
Plain tiredness will add to the problem. Check the amount of hours you sleep and also take note of the amount of hours you work in front of a computer terminal or watch television – both these activities can cause strain.
Eyedrops will relieve irritation and a bloodshot look, but will do little to soothe tired eyes.
