Is it safe to take collagen supplements?

Question by Carla S: Is it safe to take collagen supplements?
I´m 33 years old and I feel I´m losing the skin I once had in my youth. A friend of mine takes a collagen supplement and she really has a good skin, but I was wondering if it is safe, especially in the long term?

Best answer:

Answer by oldtimekid2
Absolutely! You already get collagen in other foods you eat like Jell-O, any of the slimy stuff that you find on meats, or many other sources, so it's perfectly safe to take a supplement form of it (which is typically a lot easier to take larger amounts of). It's great for skin health as well as joints and other connective tissues like ligaments and tendons.

It's been eaten for hundreds of years with various meat products and I wouldn't be surprised if it's been eaten for thousands of years... it's perfectly safe to take long-term

what can I do about my REALLY dark circles?

Question by Bekki. :D: what can I do about my REALLY dark circles?
I have really dark circles under my eyes. Depending on how much sleep I get, they can range from gray-ish to deep black. Once, during midterms, a guidance counselor called me in to see if I'd been being abused at home! What can I do? I can't spend over $ 10 on cream.
Guys, come on. You don't think I've tried concealer? It really doesn't help, just turns the area blue or brown.

Concealer. Physicians Formula makes a concealer just for dark circles.

I COULD be wrong, but I read something about collagen on Wikipedia.org and it said that women start to have a collagen decrease in their bodies at age 24....

So, I would start taking a collagen supplement at age 24.

Who Knows? Who Knows?
I know what treatment quite dramatically did that for me and many others on Answers who have used it. It's the best proven safe and natural way.
I had so many severe skin conditions that would not respond to medicines and that lead me to experiment with natural, safe remedies. These not only healed the conditions but gave me an unbelievably flawless, healthy, young looking, vibrant skin so that I am often thought to be countless years younger. To maintain healthiness of skin and keep it young looking there is no better or safer way then thoroughly massaging with essential oils. They naturally benefit skin in countless ways. They feed skin essential beneficial nutrients. Thoroughly massage into skin and you will see marked results even in one day. Massaging quite vigorously is even better for skin tightening and giving you a vibrant, glowing and blemish fee skin. Don't be afraid of doing it vigorously. If done right it is only beneficial as many users on Answers will testify(see my B.A.'s) There is no pulling or stretching of skin as you have to tighten face muscles in order to tighten or flex skin in the part being massaged and in doing so it actually exercises and conditions many of underlying face (and some neck) muscles - thus combating aging and weakening of muscles that eventually leads to sagging and wrinkling and lines. Vigorous massage is best done by using a forward and back motion using finger tips and front and sides of fingers. Circular motion is less effective. In just a few days skin will visibly tighten, look and feel smoother and have a healthy glow . I promise you that it can to totally revitalize and rejuvenate skin and face. Try it - you will be happy that you did!

What are some things I can do in advance to avoid stretch marks?

Question by Anna: What are some things I can do in advance to avoid stretch marks?
How can I improve my skin's elasticity now so that my skin will be prepared for pregnancy?

Best answer:

Answer by Heather R
1.

Eat a healthy, diverse and balanced diet that keeps your weight gain within the recommended range of 25 to 35 pounds. Excellent nutritional status is vital for your developing baby, but it also contributes to the strength and health of the body’s largest organ: the skin. What’s more, a controlled and steady weight gain, without any wild upward swings, will let your skin stretch at a steady rate without any unexpected jolts.
2.

Use a body brush or wash cloth to massage the areas where you have stretch marks, or want to prevent stretch marks from appearing - this will increase circulation to the area, which may be helpful.
3.

Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important for your overall health and well-being as well as that of your growing baby, and it is critical to healthy skin.
4.

Take your vitamins. This is one more way to ensure proper nutritional status, which is critical for your overall health and well-being, as well as beautiful skin and a healthy baby!
5.

Keep skin liberally and effectively moisturized beginning in the first or second trimester and through your recovery to your pre-pregnancy weight, perhaps with one of the many oils and creams marketed especially for stretch mark prevention. These moisturizers will help keep your skin supple and elastic plus serve as “food” (and vitamin supplements) for your skin. The various vitamins and oils used to create these formulas are designed to help enhance collagen production and support the dermis, to keep skin intact despite the rigorous stretching.

Coco butter lotion is my favorite as well.... Good luck and congratulations!

At what age should I start taking collagen supplements?

Question by Leyend123: At what age should I start taking collagen supplements?
Collagen supplements help the skin maintain its elasticity, therefore reducing aging effects on skin. I'm 15, therefore my skin still has big amounts of collagen. At what age would it be appropriate to start taking collagen supplements?

(I'm underweight so my doc put me on a fatty diet, since Iv'e lost 7 lbs already) I know that cocoa butter is recommeded, however the smell makes me sick to my stomach. I bought St. Ives Vitiman E lotion, is there anything else that works well? Thanks so much!

How to get rid of cellulite?

Question by Debbie: How to get rid of cellulite?
I'm 5'7" and about 113lbs, so I don't really need to lose weight, it would probably be unhealthy for me to do so. However, I have a ton of cellulite on my butt and upper thighs for some reason. I don't get why, because I'm technically underweight. How do I get rid of it?
I don't actually need to lose weight, as I'm already underweight, so please don't just give me general weight loss tips!

What workouts can I do for slim toned legs?

Question by Nikki: What workouts can I do for slim toned legs?
I want to get rid of the cellulite so I've been working them out and I'm starting to see improvement and my quadriceps feel firmer but I'm scared they're gonna get bulky and huge. I just want lean, toned legs with no cellulite or excess fat. What exercises should I do for this? Should I just stick to cardio? I really don't like the bulky look from working them out too much. I've been doing the exercise where you sit and lift the weights forward with your feet. Should I stop this?

Best answer:

Answer by ClickMaster
- "Cardio" is slang and has not clear meaning. It's best to say what you mean.
- "Tone" is not a real word in fitness. It's best to say what you mean.

As long as you do not increase the resistance in your exercises, you will not build muscle volume. You have no need to be concerned about waking up one morning, looking down, and seeing a pair of huge thighs.

Now, here's the bad news.

Here's the sad truth about cellulite. Cellulite is not fat, it's a genetic-based condition involving an uneven distribution of adipose and collagen tissues and once you have it, you will probably have it for life. However, because cellulite involves fat, you may be able to reduce the prominence of it by burning fat. Unfortunately, cellulite seems to present in those areas where fat tends to leave last...buttocks and thighs. So, reducing the cellulite effect will, for most people, require burning excess fat to a very low body fat percent....something which usually means a serious lifestyle change and commitment to proper eating habits for life with no guarantees.

Exercise won't help beyond burning a few more calories so plan your workouts around fitness goals such as excellence in a sport or occupation, strength, endurance, flexibility, systemic fitness, general health and well being, body sculpting, body composition, etc. Don't exercise with the hope it will help make cellulite disappear because it won't.

Here's an excerpt from an article from the US National Institute of Health, the people your doctor listens to.

"A great deal of money is spent by people who want to rid themselves of cellulite, but no amount of weight loss, exercise, massages, wraps, creams, supplements, or surgery has proven to effectively eliminate it once you have it. Liposuction, for instance, is not recommended for cellulite, and may even make it look worse."
