What is the best way to get rid of dark circles under my eyes fast?

Question by Vixen ©: What is the best way to get rid of dark circles under my eyes fast?
I'm starting school August 25th and I'd like to have them gone before then, they aren't super bad but I hate them.
What is the BEST solution to dark circles? Creams, anything? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Veronica:]
Extra Sleep.

But sorry no creams help cause dark circles are cause by lack of sleep, and the fat pads under your eyes, try a cucumber on the eyes 4 5 minutes a day, and go to bed 45 minutes earlier, and try concealer under the eyes to make them less apparent if that doesent help.

What pills or over the counter supplements helps repair worned painful joints?

Question by Jamesr2d2: What pills or over the counter supplements helps repair worned painful joints?
There are many pills with Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Are these the best? Do they work? What brands are best? Many people over age 45 or age 50 have some joint pain that is almost daily, especially if they did hard labor for a living for awhile.

Best answer:

Answer by thenoseknows
There is also MSM, devil's claw, turmeric and collagen. They can rebuild worn cartilege, as long as there's some left... if the cartilege is completely gone, it cannot just materialize it out of thin air.
Glucosamine and chondroitin should be taken in divided doses 500 mg each 3 times a day.
There are homeopathic remedies like Ruta, Arnica and Rhus Tox that can completely remove joint pain, depending on your symptoms -- it treats the underlying cause.
You can read Asa Hershoff, ND, DC's book Homeopathy for Musculoskeletal Healing for more info. and perhaps see a Homeopathic doctor.
Beats the heck out of pain killers that do liver and kidney damage.

Significance of Vitamin C supplement to the immune system?

Question by Terrance T: Significance of Vitamin C supplement to the immune system?
Does Vitamin C (specifically synthetic drug supplement of Vitamin C) provide any significant role in boosting the body daily immune system? Does any of those Vitamin C supplements really boost the body immune system compared to natural sources alone?

Best answer:

Answer by Zhuzza
It's known that vitamin C is consumed during immune response, but it's not clear what roles does it play other than as an anti-histaminic (which means it tends to modulate allergy and inflammatory response).
The main known use of vitamin C in human body is collagen production: Vitamin C is a co-factor of the enzyme lysil oxydase necessary to create cross-link between collagen chains. In absence of vitamin C collagen becomes frail, especially in locations where collagen is replaced steadily (ex blood vessels, cartilage, skin, gums) causing the scurvy. That's where vitamin C gets its name (Ascorbic Acid means acid that prevents scurvy from a- negative suffix and scorbutus which is latin for scurvy).
It's also an anti-oxydant which prevents the formation of free radicals and as such helping prevent dna damage; and it is implicated in biosynthesis and metabolism of other substances like carnitine (a cytosol - mithocondrion fatty acid shuttle) and thyrosine (an amminoacid).
Withouth further studies, it's hard to say if an extra-uptake of vitamin C is beneficial, ininfluent or even dangerous, though the latter is pretty remote considering that it's water soluble and thus easily expelled by the body.

How can you make eye floaters less noticeable?

Question by Erica: How can you make eye floaters less noticeable?
I'm 21 years old. I went to the eye doctor a couple months ago about them, and he told me I had eye floaters. They're very annoying and bothersome. He said my eyes looked healthy, but it doesn't take care of the fact that they're VERY annoying. Does anybody have any tips to make these floaters less bothersome and annoying?? Someone told me that iron helps, but I'm nervous to take iron without knowing what it will do to me. I have anxiety about taking supplements without knowing much about them. any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Dj
Most commonly, there is no treatment recommended.

* Vitrectomy may be successful in treating more severe cases;[16][17] however, the procedure is typically not warranted in those with lesser symptoms due to the potential for complications to include cataracts, retinal detachment, and severe infection. The technique usually involves making three openings through the sclera known as the pars plana. Of these small gauge instruments, one is an infusion port to resupply a saline solution and maintain the pressure of the eye, the second is a fiber optic light source, and the third is a vitrector. The vitrector has a reciprocating cutting tip attached to a suction device. This design reduces traction on the retina via the vitreous material. A variant sutureless, self-sealing technique is sometimes used.

* Laser Vitreolysis.[18] In this procedure an ophthalmic laser (usually an Yttrium aluminium garnet "YAG" laser) is focused onto the floater and in a series of brief bursts, the laser vaporizes and lyses (cuts) the collagen strands making up the solids component of the floater. Laser treatment is not widely practiced and is only performed by very few specialists in the world. It is an outpatient process, which is much less invasive to the eye than a vitrectomy, with fewer side effects. [19]
* An alternative treatment option is for the sufferer to use psychological conditioning to habituate to eye floaters, so that they no longer notice them.[citation needed]

If I lost weight would my stretch marks shrink?

Question by Beth: If I lost weight would my stretch marks shrink?
I have gained weight so fast from gaining about a stone and a half since January so I have hideous stretch marks all over my hips and thighs. I really need to lose weight, if I did this would my stretch marks appear smaller as there would be less skin for them to spread across?

Best answer:

Answer by ny
Stretch Marks
The only true way to really prevent stretch marks is to lose or gain
weight slowly. These lines start out red and then evolve to a white
depressed scar with a different advancement than adjacent tissue.
They are caused by breaking of collagen which then heals with a scar.
You don't have to be pregnant, fat, or big to get them. As a matter
of fact, it is a very common skin condition, but most people who have
them are embarrassed by them and keep them to themselves - some people
have good genetics and some don't when it comes to skin elasticity.
Tips To Reduce Stretch Marks
The following tips may help you reduce their appearance. Surgery is
always a last resort - following these tips could possibly give you
results, but it does take time. Remember secrets to achieve success
are found in your daily routine.
Massage cocoa butter into the stretch marks - or a cream such as
Barmon Stretchmark Cream with Cocoa butter as one of the ingredients.
Exfoliate your skin with a loofah or skin brush when you shower to
stimulate circulation. Doing this removes the dull skin and the dead
cells in the scars that show as stretch marks.
Massage Vitamin E oil or cream on your stretch marks. Rub it into
your skin after a shower. Products such as Rejuvine includes Vitamin E
as one of their ingredients.
Speak to your doctor about prescribing to tretinoin cream (Retin-A).
What Is Tretinoin?
Tretinoin is used to treat acne and aged, sun damaged skin. A study
in the Archives of Dermatology, May 1996, shows that 0.1% tretinoin
significantly improves the appearance of early stretch marks.
Tretinoin works best on stretch marks that are new or enlarging.
Eat foods high in vitamins A, E, C. Also use supplements in addition
to your diet that supplies you with these vitamins. These vitamins
help form collagen - the supporting fibers in the skin.
Zinc - Eat foods high in this or use a supplement such as ZMA. This
vitamin helps form collagen - the supporting fibers in the skin.
EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids), help make cell walls. Essential fatty
acids can be found in many vegetables, vegetable oils and fish oils.
If you don't regularly eat these try supplementing your diet with
them.
Drink lots of water! Make sure that you keep your skin hydrated!
Laser Surgery has shown to be useful in reducing the appearance of
stretch marks. They seem to work best on stretch marks that are still
fairly new and are red or purple in color.

What's the difference betwen soy protein, whey protein and protein from food?

Question by KRISTEN l: What's the difference betwen soy protein, whey protein and protein from food?
My husband started a more intense workout and has to supplement it with much more protein. He's eating more food protein, but as far as supplement shakes we are wondering what the difference is between whey and soy and other protein shakes. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Dr Wot
All 'Proteins' are made from Amino Acids, fitted together in different ways like interchangeable pieces in a jigsaw puzzle.

The general idea in Bodybuilding is to eat the right 'balance' of Amino Acids so that your body can make 'Muscle Proteins' (actin, myosin, fibrin and collagen, together with several other types) efficiently.

There are some disagreements about the best way to do this, because some of the foods that have a 'profile' of AAs that matches human muscle closely (like egg for example), aren't very easy to digest. Whey is often the easiest protein to digest, but some people are better at this than others. Soy protein (from soya beans) can cause intestinal gas, for some people.

The best solution is usually to try different products, find out which one works best for the individual, and 'correct' its profile by taking amino supplements.

This approach involves learning about AA profiles, and especially about the 'Essential Eight' amino acids. It can feel like hard work, but the effort is very worthwhile, especially because of the other bodybuilding knowledge that you will pick up while researching the topic.

How do I be less self consious in a bikini with stretch marks and a flat chest ?

Question by : How do I be less self consious in a bikini with stretch marks and a flat chest ?
the stretch marks are red and on my thieghs and totally have a flat chest . teenager . =(

Best answer:

Answer by I'am just me :]
There is ways to get rid of stretch mark's.
Im sure you can find it at walmart, drug, target and more.
there is alot of things to get rid of them im not for sure how good they work tho.

Stretch marks are scars left behind when skin is overstretched, and fibers in the middle layer (dermis) have broken. They most often occur during pregnancy, bodybuilding, extreme weight gain, occasionally puberty and are usually found on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, legs, and upper arms. Fresh stretch marks appear initially as red lines and then slowly fade to a pale white color over the course of several months. While it is possible to reduce and even eliminate the appearance of stretch marks, it is much easier to prevent them.

•Skin Creams and Lotions – Lotions containing cocoa butter are rumored to not only help reduce stretch marks, but to help prevent them entirely. Any cream or oil that is made specifically for the prevention or treatment of stretch marks will help keep your skin healthy and elastic. If you are pregnant or breast feeding consult your doctor first as lotions can contain ingredients that may be passed to your unborn baby or into breast milk.
•Vitammin C – Supplementing these vitamins may help increase the strength and elasticity of the collagen within your skin and reducing your chance of forming stretch marks.
•Stay hydrated. Ever try to squeeze a dry sponge?

Now about your flat chest.
now i know how that does feel cause im totally flat chested to.. and i sometimes get picked on about it.. which is super stupid. But theres no way to change it.. i know some places do sell push up bikin top's. maybe you should look at them that way you can have something there.

Im very self consious about my body to i say bad things about myself and that to.. and well everybody hates that and think you want attetion well i don't i could care less.. but anyways theres no way to get your chest bigger.. after you get older you will get some soon lol :)

But no matter what anybody says don't let them say you arn't ain'tiful :) everybodys beautiful in there own little way

What can be done about black marks from old pimples?

Question by alot_luckiness: What can be done about black marks from old pimples?
I have chocolate colored skin. Every so often (all you women know exactly when), I get at least two pimples on my face that go away after 3 or 4 days. But they always leave black marks. Even though my skin is smooth and soft, it is peppered with black spots from these inevitable zits. I have tried going on the pill, exfoliating twice every week, Vitamin C and E supplements and drinking plenty of water but the marks are still there. I have been forced to cover them with makeup. What can I do? Lightening creams will be my last resort.

What medicine can I take to stimulate collagen production?

Question by scarred_for_life: What medicine can I take to stimulate collagen production?
What medicine (or pharmaceutical products such as dietary supplements) can I take to stimulate collagen production in depressed scars?

Best answer:

Answer by gandalf
There isn't one known, at this time.

Getting an adequate supply of protein in your diet (good quality protein) will provide the necessary building blocks.

It's not going to do diddly for the depressed scars. Those are the product of a normal reparative process that didn't quite get the tissue back to normal. You might consider seeing if a plastic surgeon will inject a little collagen in the area, if it's cosmetically embarassing, but I'm toting a pretty significant number of scars, most of 'em covered by hair or clothing, and the visible ones, no one seems to notice.

Hair products are not made of glue to fix, prevent, reverse hair from getting damaged or hair loss, or make them grow . . . . they are a trillion dollar business. They also do NOT give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss caused by heat & chemicals - hair's worst enemies.

If you want perfection, you NEED patience. Even anorexic models have long hairs, and they're not considered 'healthy'. http://www.newser.com/story/155031/12-ce… I was one, and had long hair when I weighed 85 lbs.

Babies can do that, by drinking their milk. . . . so can you, so can any of us without any help. From your: good genes, good hair care and all the healthy foods from Mother Nature, that's where you get all your vitamins & minerals for growing from head to toes. Shampoos are meant for cleaning the hair, not for growing.

If you've straightened your hair in the past, it may grow slowly or none at all.
DIET: Google: "Foods for Healthy Hair" http://www.foodforhealthyhair.com/ http://sg.news.yahoo.com/food-for-health… - or 10 Best Foods for Your Hair.
http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/07/0…
NO MATTER which link you picked, they all suggest the same foods. Your hair may be the fastest-growing tissue in the body but, unlike the skin, it cannot repair itself. That is why getting the right balance of vitamins and proteins is imperative. Don't expect to look like you've stepped out of a hair commercial the day after you've changed your diet. It is likely to take at least three months before you actually see tangible results. Hair is dead, but hair also has electrical energy; the negative charge of damaged hair can lead to flyways and unruly hair.

Growing healthy hair doesn't come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. If you're in HS, your hair & nails should be growing normally, and as healthily as possible, since you're eating healthy foods. But when hair isn't growing as fast, it's because they've been tampered with: chemicals, hair straightening, etc. . .

CARE: 1. Washing less often, builds the natural oil your hair needs, to get them smoother, shinier, silkier, softer. Man-made products are just temporary, until you wash them again, and at the same time washing off the natural oil your hair NEEDS. Hair products just absorb on your hair if they're dry, like a sponge. Shampoo & condition is all you need.

When you wash your hair with one of those nutrient-rich shampoos or conditioners, most of the nutrients and active ingredients in the product don’t actually end up in your hair, they wind up down the drain… along with all the money you spent on the shampoo. It is HOW you use to style your hair or what styling tools that damage the hair, and what chemicals you're adding to the hair, not the shampoo or conditioner.

2. If you want your hair soft, you can briefly blow dry it, set them in curlers or pin curls them, blow dry, let them cool off, take the curlers &/or pins, finger tousle the hair or brush lightly to style. They will be silky, soft, smooth & shiny (for straight hair).

3. Cutting your split ends yourself, spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day so you can easily spot them, using a 2" scissors, cut strand by strand, section by section, allowing new growth to take over. Then 2x a year, get a good hair cut. This won't speed things up, but it will make the hair look healthier while it's growing. Even healthy hair like mine get them, due to normal brushing & styling. but mostly from using stretchy chord for stressing the hair.

. .

Whey protein and some carbs are good for muscle tissue; things like gluscosamine and other stuff in those joint pills are good for your joints; calcium is good for your bones; but what nurtient/supplements are good for keeping you tendons in very good condition? I'm not into the very heavy weights yet, so my tendons should be ok for now. I just need this information for preventive maintenance. So, what nutrient, vitamins, minerals, or dietary supplements are good for tendons?

How can I grow my hair faster and grow taller?

Question by GabrielleW: How can I grow my hair faster and grow taller?
I'm a 13 yr old girl and I'm just trying to grow more this year and grow my hair out...thanks for any comments!

Answer by oldtimekid2
There's kind of a tricky technicality with a question about hair like this. There are natural ingredients that your body uses to create healthier hair... but "healthier hair" doesn't always mean thicker or growing faster (although it might, depending on the person).
The problem is that your body will do what it needs to do and taking supplements or eating the proper foods will help your body to do that. Yeah, that sounds vague, but giving your body the proper nutrition may not force it to do what you want it to do, but the body will do what it needs to do according to your DNA's blueprint.
With that being said, the main nutrients to help with healthy hair would be Silica, Biotin, MSM (an organic form of Sulfur), Gelatin, Collagen, and some of the B Vitamins. There are quite a few combination products out there that have these (most of them mentioning hair, skin, and nails), but you can get some from your basic foods, too... Gelatin is what's in Jell-O, Collagen is that jelly-like stuff you see in some meat preparations, Biotin and other B Vitamins are in Brewer's Yeast among other places, and the list goes on.

As far as growing taller, I'm sure you may not want to hear this, but the only thing that will work safely and naturally is time.
Unfortunately, nothing can force your body to grow taller than your DNA says you will and time is all it takes to make that growth happen.
There are some things that can take away from your potential height (like you said, coffee/caffeine, smoking, drugs, etc), so as long as you stay away from those, exercise at least on a semi-regular basis, and have a healthy diet, you should grow as tall as you're supposed to. Besides all that, your growing age normally peaks around 20 years old, so since you're younger than that, you've got plenty of time to finish growing and any HGH pills (or other "artificial growth" products) can actually be detrimental to your height and/or health.
The only thing that actually would work aside from that would be a risky, expensive, and very painful surgery where they cut your leg in half (no joke), add a few spacers, then let your body heal. It's most common in China where height has a bigger impact in certain jobs. Over the course of a year or two, they could add an inch or so to your leg... but I don't think it would be worth the pain and price myself.
However, there are insoles that will help to boost your height because they are adding the height, not making you grow taller.
Good luck and I hope I helped!

Is it THAT important to dry brush before a shower?

Question by Arielle L: Is it THAT important to dry brush before a shower?
I would like to add dry brushing to my health routine, and almost all sources recommend doing it daily before a shower... However, my skin dries out easily so I shower every other day or every two days (I sponge bath the areas that need to be washed daily) so I was wondering, is it more important to dry brush on a daily basis, or before a shower? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Ralph M
Yes, it is very important before a shower in order to rinse off the dead skin cells. It is also important to shower every day using a mild natural-based soap. If your water has a lot of chlorine, you may want to try to find a shower head water filter to remove the chlorine. Use a good natural moisturizer after showering while your skin is still damp. This should help your dry skin tremendously.

Does deep massage help prevent cellulite?

Question by Cathleen: Does deep massage help prevent cellulite?
I'm 13, my mom massages he legs every night so she doesn't get cellulite. She says I should do it too while I'm young so I don't get it. Does it even work? She does it because there is a woman in her gym who is in ok but not amazing shape and deep massages every night, and she has next to no cellulite.

Best answer:

Answer by ClickMaster
Your mom is wrong and wasting her time with massages. If massaging really did work, don't you think every female on the planet would know about it???

Here's the sad truth about cellulite. Cellulite is not fat, it's a genetic-based condition involving an uneven distribution of adipose and collagen tissues and once you have it, you will probably have it for life. However, because cellulite involves fat, you may be able to reduce the prominence of it by burning fat. Unfortunately, cellulite seems to present in those areas where fat tends to leave last...buttocks and thighs. So, reducing the cellulite effect will, for most people, require burning excess fat to a very low body fat percent....something which usually means a serious lifestyle change and commitment to proper eating habits for life with no guarantees.

Exercise won't help beyond burning a few more calories so plan your workouts around fitness goals such as excellence in a sport or occupation, strength, endurance, flexibility, systemic fitness, general health and well being, body sculpting, body composition, etc. Don't exercise with the hope it will help make cellulite disappear because it won't.

Here's an excerpt from an article from the US National Institute of Health, the people your doctor listens to.

"A great deal of money is spent by people who want to rid themselves of cellulite, but no amount of weight loss, exercise, massages, wraps, creams, supplements, or surgery has proven to effectively eliminate it once you have it. Liposuction, for instance, is not recommended for cellulite, and may even make it look worse."

Is it OK to take collagen supplements internally, while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Question by creative1: Is it OK to take collagen supplements internally, while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Ive read such great things about taking collagen. I cant imagine it not being beneficial as it makes up 65 percent of the protien in our bodies. I want to take it because Im noticing fine lines around my eyes, and my hair is dry, brittle and thinning a little bit. Ive read great reviews on it helping with energy, weight loss, muscle gain, antiaging, hairgrowth, joint pain.. etc.. (not that Im trying to lose weight at the moment) Does anyone know if it is OK to take while pregnant?

It has to do with how the specific supplement is metabolized & digested.
Some need the stomach acid of an empty stomach & some need food to mix with to be digested.

How to get rid of stretch marks?

Question by Katie: How to get rid of stretch marks?
I am of normal weight and height for my age . A few years ago I lost quite abit of weight which is probably the reason I have stretch marks . I'm currently 16 and love going to the beach and wearing cute lower cut styles so marks are quite annoying . What are some ways I can get rid of them? My problem areas are my chest , hips , and inner thigh.

Best answer:

Answer by Cahill
*Brush your skin with a loofah or skin brush when you shower to stimulate circulation.

*Massage cocoa butter into the stretch marks.

*Use vitamin E oil on your stretch marks. Massage it into your skin after a shower.

*Talk to your doctor about using tretinoin cream on stretch marks. It is available by prescription only.

*Eat foods high in vitamins A, E and C (see Related eHows), or take supplements in addition to your diet. However, pregnant women should avoid taking more than 25,000 IU of vitamin A.

*Add foods or supplements to your diet that are high in zinc,, which is good for the skin, and silica (beets, brown rice, bell peppers, soybeans, leafy green vegetables and whole grains), which helps form collagen, the supporting fibers in the skin.

*Eat foods that contain essential fatty acids, which help make cell walls. Essential fatty acids can be found in many vegetables, vegetable oils and fish oils.

Hope I helped and good luck!! :) :)

well, protein and carbohydrates gives you long lasting energy. So eat eggs, peanut butter, or anything that has those two things. Remember, carbs are your body's most preferred source of energy, not simple sugars.

Is it safe to take Collagen vitamins with medication?

Question by Mikes: Is it safe to take Collagen vitamins with medication?
I take an anti depressant and a benzos for anxiety. I just purchased Collagen pills to clear up my skin but am worried if there are any side effects or if this is safe?

Best answer:

Answer by oldtimekid2
Your best (and safest) bet would be to ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs and supplements you're taking. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not.... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-)
I don't imagine there would be a problem as Collagen exists in many sources of meat so there would probably be a warning on the benzos about eating meat with them if there was a problem... but I don't have access to that database to verify so I would check with the doctor or pharmacist. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Are pulverized pills as effective?

Question by Cosmopolo: Are pulverized pills as effective?
I'm taking a collagen supplement and the pills are freakin' HUGE. AND if that's not bad enough, I have to take 3 twice a day. They really hurt my throat. Can I smash them into a powder substance? And if so, how do I take the pills in powder form? Will it be as effective as taking them whole?

Best answer:

Answer by James
crushing a pill will help you absorb it faster but it has the exact same effect. your best bet is probably to cut the pills in half so they are easier to swallow.

Collagen production is reduced as we age. Is this inevitable or is there something you can so to prevent this.

Question by dee b: Collagen production is reduced as we age. Is this inevitable or is there something you can so to prevent this.
. . .like through health or diet?

I've heard that Coenzyme Q-10 can boost collagen production, but would you have to continue taking it indefinitely?

Best answer:

Answer by Michael P (MD)
It would have no effect.
Food supplements are not invented and marketed because they are effective (in which case they would also likely have side effects), but rather because most likely they are not, since they are abundantly present in the body anyway. Be smart, save your many, and don't worry about the collagen, I have not seen anyone die from lack of collagen (nor of coenzyme Q).

How to prevent rain rot on horses?

Question by CrimsonRun: How to prevent rain rot on horses?
In the late summer of 2011, my fiance and I moved from Wisconsin to Tennessee to pursue his degrees. Naturally, we brought our five horses with us (two paints and three thoroughbreds). With the climate being so different than what we were used to up north, we had a bit of adjusting to do. The biggest challenge that we are still working on trying to over come are the winters here. It stays so wet and will rain for three days straight at times. Even when it wasn't raining, the air would still be quite damp.

(A few notes before I get too into this.)
With our current situation, we are renting a house and a small 15 acre farm in the town where the school is. Regrettably, the farm we're renting does not have a barn so we are unable to put them up. (When my fiance graduates next spring, we will be buying our own farm with better accommodations for the horses, but for now we need to make due with what we have.) They do have access to shelter, but being horses, they would rather graze than stand in a shed, even with hay in there to keep the busy. The paints are very hardy, and we thus far have not had any issues with either of them concerning rain rot. It's with the TBs that we've been having such a struggle.

Last year, we were concerned about rain rot so we blanketed the horses with water proof blankets. However, with the constant rain, the blankets would soak through or would trap the moisture under the blankets and the horses would end up with hot spots. We would try to rotate the blankets as best we could putting them on when the temps dropped, over night on cold nights, or if it was raining. If it wasn't raining, and especially on sunny days, we would make sure the blankets were off so they could "air out". Even still, they would get rain rot. We have been using anti-fungal sprays on them to help clear up the rain rot.

This year, I decided to forgo the blankets all together. In the spring, I had put them on a new, custom made forge-based feed that has extra oils and protein in to help them out with the coats. It's done wonders for all of them. They've been in great weight, very healthy, and hardly had any sun-bleaching over the summer. This winter, the paints are still great with no coat issues whatsoever, as well as one of the TBs. The other two are doing better than last winter, but they are still getting rain rot.

Is there anything else I can try to prevent the rain rot of starting in the first place? I've looked into adding Flax or BOSS to their feed to give extra Omega-3s to help their skin and coat, but I'm not sure if that will actually aid in preventing the rain rot. Any advice is much appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by gallop
You are right to leave the blankets off which will maximize exposure of skin to air. Blankets are rain rot's best friend.
Rain rot is a bacterial infection (not a fungus) by dermatophilus congolensis. The bacteria are anaerobes that thrive in dark, damp, airless environments, and live dormant in skin. Any horse who has been infected in the past has the bacteria present and ready to activate and multiply at the first chance they get.

Anything that compromises skin integrity or immune functions can allow the bacteria to colonize and develop active infection. Continual exposure to dampness for 12 hours compromises skin integrity sufficiently for infection to develop. Anything you can do to get the skin dried out periodically to prevent that kind of continual dampness will help to keep infection at bay.

Good parasite control and maintaining healthy digestion assures absorption of nutrients. A mostly forage diet goes far to aid digestive tract health and functions and maintain optimum digestion. It doesn't do any good to provide a well balanced diet if maldigestion or malabsorption from the digestive tract prevents nutrients from reaching body cells to be utilized.

I have fed Enreco's Omega Horseshine as a supplement with excellent results in the past when I was showing my horses. It is a linseed oil meal made from flax that is well stabilized and formulated and my horses always loved it.

MSM is an organic sulfur that may also benefit your horse's skin integrity and other connective tissues if it is deficient, and supplementing it could be of help. it is often given to improve joint tissues in degenerative joint disease and could also benefit your horse's joint health.

I recommend avoiding use of chemical disinfectants or doing anything that could abrade the skin, and just very gently soak the scabs with sterile 0.9% saline solution until they easily loosen. I use cotton makeup removal pads to carefully lift off the scabs and pus, and then saline-soaked pads to clean the lesions, and dry pads to absorb all moisture. The scabs are laden with bacteria and harbor bacteria beneath them. The bacteria can survive for a year in the scabs after they are removed, so dispose of them in sealed containers. Be careful, since the d. congolensis bacteria also infect humans, so take precautions. Once you get the scabs and pus removed and thoroughly dry the lesions, any remaining bacteria die off and healing can take place. You can just leave the sores exposed to air, or you can apply a thin layer of EMT collagen gel to the sores to seal out insects, absorb exudate, block pain and itch sensations, and rapidly heal them.
You can buy isotonic saline at a drugstore or make it at home by dissolving 3/4 of a teaspoon of non-iodized table salt into one pint of boiled water. This makes sterile isotonic saline solution which is balanced with body fluids so it won't harm healthy tissue cells or irritate skin, and is also the best flush for any open wounds.

Sometimes the infection invades deeper layers of tissue, in which case you may need your vet to administer appropriate systemic antibiotic injections to get this under control, since topical treatment can't reach deeper tissues.
************************
ETA.............. I should add that when the sebaceous oils of the skin and coating the hairs is intact, rain is wicked away from the skin by the slick, waterproof hairs, and the skin oil acts as a water repellant to keep it dry even if water makes it past the hair coat. When a horse sweats, the dampness forms beneath the skin oils and hairs and deteriorates the sebaceous protection from skin oils. By leaving the blankets off, even in rainy weather, the skin integrity is more likely to remain intact.

Do you think I need a collagen supplement?

Question by J: Do you think I need a collagen supplement?
You see, I drink collagen supplements three tablets twice daily (as the label says how I'm supposed to). I'm 15 yrs old, 5'3 in height and weigh 112 lbs, so I am wondering if it's necessary. I am not sure if this is doing me any good.
Here is the supplement facts for the serving size of 6 tablets:
Collagen Type I & III 6g
Sodium 0.03g
Vit C (as calcium ascorbate) 60mg
No fat, cholesterol or carbs.
It says here it's good for the joints, tendons, ligament, bones, muscles, skin, hair, nails
I take the tablets when 30 mins before a meal, when my stomach is empty (I follow the label).

you need to lower your cortisol levels in your body and lower the insuline levels by eating low carbs and drinking a lot of green tea and you will be young and beautiful glowwing skin will radiate and delay wrinkles. n forget all the expensive stuff. trust me on this one. I have been reading for years and green tea is an ancient secret. no sugar. you will lose weight and feel great and lose belly fat and saddle bags just from drinking green tea for a few weeks. YOU WILL HAVE MORE ENERGY! RELAX AND SLEEP GOOD. if you take suppliments you dont need you are giving your body something to excrete in your stool, thats all. it sells and people buy it. like shark cartilage and oyster shell calcium..you know something...they are totally worthless. our body can not digest oyster shells...it actually causes crust in your veins and sometimes leads to a stroke.
cortisol is the killer hormine and like cortisone it will make your skin thin and face fat and round. insuline makes all your organs sick and high levels damage kidneys and your heart.. it also makes your body store fat and causes a fatty liver in many middle aged people...green tea prevents this. really. it's too good to be true.

Which supplements are good to help improve/maintain skins overall appearance?

Question by FRANKIE G: Which supplements are good to help improve/maintain skins overall appearance?
I've noticed that since I changed my eating habits (for the better), moisturize day and night, wear sunblock during the day on my face, take a multi vitamin and collagen supplements that my skin has improved dramatically. Not a night and day difference, of course, but it's clearer, softer, less fine lines and the redness is gone. I look like the youthful 27 year old I'm supposed to be!

I would say, not keep your expectation too high, you'd be disappointed. Collagen and vitamin may improve your skin, the wrinkles would be lesser but they are not cure all, get 20 years younger kind of thing.

Give it a month or two.

I suggest you to keep taking the supplement without thinking about them. Later, if it really works, someone will tell you that you look younger :)
