What vitamins are best for healthy joints?

Question by jonyankasky: What vitamins are best for healthy joints?
I just turned 42 and I run 4 miles every other day. I am a bigger guy and want to take supplements to help my joints and sockets. What do you suggest?

  1. vitamins aren't going to do it. Glucosamine Chondroiton and cod liver oil tablets will do wonders though. Supplements, thats what ya need. I have had arthritis since I was 16 and no one even knows it because of Glucosamine Chondroiton. In my experience the cheapest ones work great and usually within two weeks.

  2. I would suggest cod-liver oil for your joints. Remember that the body does not absorb supplements on their own very well. But if taken in the form of cod-liver oil or in other natural products, it is more likely to ansorb these. Also, I would look out for special supplements like JointAce, which has all supplements and omega fatty acids you need combined. Also the Omega Acids such as C D and B all in one capsule would help. Though nothing beats a good natural oily fish and a healthy diet. Good luck.

  3. I suggest all natural Joint Health Complex. It supports the natural renewal and formation process of joint cartilage.

Contains 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride, plus cat's claw extract, zinc, copper, manganese and boron.

Hope this is useful and feel free to contact me with questions.

  5. You are starting at a time of life that is a bit late to begin protecting joints. You are really trying to "repair" at this stage, or prevent more damages.

Vitamins and minerals are best taken over a long duration of time, starting when we are in our twenties. Then our middle years, and "old" age years, are more assured of being comfortable physically. (I fall into the Older age bracket.)

On a long term basis, the best minerals are Calcium and Potassium. I would forego mega-doses. Some people get Calcium stones in the urinary track from intaking too much. Keep all vitamins and minerals at a moderation. Potassium helps balance Calcium intake in your body functions. Zinc is also strengthening to muscles. Muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones are grateful for a solid intake of those minerals. Your Calcium capsule should contain a balance of Magnesium in it. The two are sold as one.

Vitamin C is enhancing to collagen and elastin - elements that strengthen skin. But, Vitamin C is also good on membranes (i.e., skin, fascia, gums, and intestinal membrane). Fascia is Connective tissue and I think it is found laying over joint muscles.

I took Vitamins for 33 years, daily, and I believed it was best to use EACH of the best known vitamins to balance each other's functions in the body. Vitamin A and C do best supported by Vitamin D. Vitamin B Complex does best in stopping Calcium from causing stones. So, each day I took each vitamin on it's own, separately, yet all together each day. No One-a-Day vitamins for me! I kept to moderate doses even if it meant buying a mega dose, but only taking it once every other day! You see how you can juggle it? If a Vitamin is a mega dose, but requires you take two per day - take one!

I would recommend you never just take one or two chosen minerals or vitamins. They interact so strongly and are so dependent upon each other that I can only say it is un-wise to cause imbalance in any particular one. Take all A,B,C,D,E, and Calcium, Potassium, Zinc. I recommend no more than a Zinc dose of 50 mg. I would take that every other day.

On Vitamins B and E I would do the following: A normal dose of "B" should be taken every other day, even every two days. "E" should be no more than 400 mg. per day. Vitamin "B" is stored in the liver. You don't want to overdo it. Although it is water soluble (you pour out in urine what the body does not use), still, some of it is put into the liver for storage. I would not take a higher dose than 50mg. per day of the Complex, and 25mg. is better, I think. Even 3 times a week of 50mg of "B" would be good. If urine turns too yellow from the Niacin in "B", then stop for awhile. Your body is just pouring it out.

Lastly, I always bought capsules rather than tablets, since the powder in the capsule is more readily digested than breaking down tablets with binders in them.

Good luck with this endeavor. Best regards, Lana
