  1. I think its protein, like any other protein. Rawhides (for dogs) are mostly collagen.
Your stomach breaks it into amino acids - like every other food.

It's a waste of money - and at twenty your joints can't possibly be bad unless you have a medical condition that requires treatment.

Edit: The resident homeopath is correct, your own collagen is important stuff. There is no benefit in taking it though - so she rather missed the point.

  2. Vitamin C is responsible for natural collagen formation in the body. Collagen is needed for cartiledge formation, which is in every joint in your body. Intervertebral discs in your spine are made of collagen. Collagen supplements are the latest/next generation joint supplements.
Osteoarthritis causes cartiledge deterioration. Wrinkles in skin are caused by loss of collagen that occurs in ageing.
If you think about it, collagen is pretty important stuff.

  3. It is helpful and you cannot make it from protein alone. Besides the vitamin C there's a lot of sulfur involved. A lot of people take 3,000 mg MSM sulfur for their joints. My main concern about a collagen supplement is that 3,000 mg is a lot. If a collagen supplement contains less than 3,000 mg for example, then it obviously contains way less than 3,000 mg sulfur which doesn't make very much collagen. So you would need a ton; so much that it probably needs to be a food not a supplement. Like ordering tendon in your pho for example. Or people make broth out of chicken's feet to extract it.

Omega 3s, calcium and vitamin D may also be related.

So basically unless that collagen supplement is a large drink it sounds like a scam. Try some MSM or eat some animal collagen such as tendon.
